Fire Chief Report

2010 was a busy year for the Emergency Services in Smoky Lake County.  The rain this past year sure helped keep grass and wild land fire under control but the motor vehicle collisions and medical assists have increase once again. The County was able to rent the City of Edmonton’s burn tower for interior structure firefighting training and is the only volunteer department that has been allowed to rent the tower from the City. A special thanks to Cory Whitlock to getting us access to the tower and for all the training  provided to the County departments and we look forward to another good year of you training our three Departments.

Vilna Fire Department responded to 62 fire calls in 2010. The County purchased a new fire truck for the Department, which is the first 4 wheel drive fire truck in the County.  With all the training provided by the County, the Vilna Fire Department has 7 members that are 1001 Certified, which is the national standard for firefighters.

Smoky Lake Fire Department responded to 86 fire calls in 2010. The Department has 4 members that are 1001 Certified and some members that only require a few courses to be certified and will be completed in 2011.

Waskatenau Fire Department responded to 37 fire calls in 2010. The Village of Waskatenau suffered a major loss to the community with the Providence Grain Elevator burning down. I would like to thank all three Departments for all the work and time put into extinguishing this fire. The Waskatenau Fire Department does not have any members that are 1001 Certified but in 2011, 85% of their members will have this certification completed.

Fire Permits are required year round and can be picked up at the Smoky Lake County Office.

911 Services Changes

Smoky Lake County and all the municipalities have switched 911 provide to Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority and will be providing the Fire Departments with enhanced dispatching services so the volunteer firefighters are not answering the 911 call directly.

Automatic External Defibrillators

Smoky Lake County was able to make joint municipal purchase of state-of-the-art automatic external defibrillators for all three fire departments. This was made possible because of the Olympics, as the AEDs were ordered for the Olympics and never used and we were able to purchase them at a reduced cost. In 2011 the Fire Departments will be looking to donate the old AEDs back into the communities.

On behalf of Smoky Lake County, I would like to thank all the volunteer firefighters for all their time and dedication to train and respond to emergency calls in 2010.
